About Alison Osmand
I live on the stunning Mid North Coast of New South Wales and offer mediation services locally and across New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, both in person and via video platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
I have over 30 years’ experience as a family lawyer, working with people from all walks of life and representing parents, extended family members, and children. I understand how overwhelming separation and family disputes can be, and I’m committed to providing a calm, structured space to help families resolve matters with dignity and care.
Having worked as both a Judicial Registrar and Senior Judicial Registrar in the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA), I’ve seen first-hand the impact litigation can have on families, especially children.
I believe mediation is one of the most effective ways to help families stay in control of their decisions, avoid unnecessary stress, and move forward with confidence.

What experience do you have?
I obtained a combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Law Degree from the Australian National University and was admitted to practise as a legal practitioner in the ACT Supreme Court and signed the roll of the High Court in 1991. I worked exclusively in the area of family law since that time. I commenced my legal career at the ACT Legal Aid Office and then moved to private practice in 1998.
I worked in all aspects of family law with a particular focus on complex parenting and property matters. I was also an experienced and highly regarded Independent Children’s Lawyer. In 1997 I was awarded Children’s Lawyer of the Year by the National Youth and Children’s Law Centre NSW.
I conducted most of my clients’ interim hearings, mediations and settlement conferences as solicitor advocate.
I served on various Committees of the ACT Law Society (including Council) and on local ACT boards and management committees of community-based organisations with a focus on young women and women’s health matters.
In 2022 I left practise and joined the new FCFCOA as a Judicial Registrar working fulltime solely in the court’s dispute resolution space, conducting hundreds of conciliation conferences and parenting conferences on a nation-wide basis. In November 2023 I was appointed a Senior Judicial Registrar, responsible for hearing and determining interim disputes in the FCFCOA, in Divisions 1 and 2 of the Court, including Evatt matters.
Do I have to be in court to attend mediation?
